Repayment Education & Support

Managing repayment is just as important as receiving funding.

Repaying your student loan

Student loans must be paid back.
Many students have two loans that need to be managed separately.
Write your awesome label here.

Most students leave school with an Alberta student loan and a Canada student loan.

Having two loans means you need to handle two debts and two payment schedules.
Your Alberta loan is managed through Alberta MyLoan and your Canada loan is managed through theNational Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC). You must create individual accounts through these websites and handle your repayments separately.

While You Are a Student:
Alberta student loans are interest-free while you are studying, and you do not need to make any payments.

After You Leave/Complete School:
Once you finish your studies, there is a grace period during which loans remain interest-free, and no payments are required. This grace period lasts 12 months, starting from the first day of the month after your end date.

Repayment:
Repayment begins 12 months after you leave school. At this point, interest is added to your loan balance monthly, and a monthly repayment schedule is automatically set up for you.

Important Update – Grace Period Extension:
As of July 1, 2023, the grace period for Alberta student loans has been extended from six months to 12 months. This update applies to students who completed their studies on or after December 1, 2022. Previously, repayment started six months after leaving school, with interest applied monthly.

Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP)

Write your awesome label here.

Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP):

Helps manage loan repayment based on your income. If you earn less, your payments may be reduced or deferred.

The Repayment Assistance Plan is a great option if you are having difficulty making your payments. If you are eligible, an affordable payment is calculated based on your family size and income. Depending on your circumstances, that could mean that no payment is required for the 6-month approval period.

Effective July 1, 2023, Alberta’s government is increasing income thresholds for the Repayment Assistance Plan from $25,000 to $40,000.

National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC):

Central hub to manage your Canada student loans online, including tracking balances and making payments.

Repayment Assistance for Students with Disabilities:

Specialized assistance programs for students with disabilities to help make repayment more manageable.
